Bamboo Compression Socks That Cut Your Night Trips

Socks on by day. Less water back at night.

  • Aimed at the water, not the bladder. They work by day on the water your legs hold, so less of it comes back when you lie down.
  • Tested against look-alikes. In a double-blind trial, light knee-length socks worn by day cut night trips by 54 percent in two weeks, against 31 percent on socks that looked the same.

How to wear them

Put them on when you get up, before your legs have been down for long. Wear them through the day, at least eight hours, as in the trial. Take them off before you lie down in the evening. Never sleep in them. If you have heart failure, poor circulation in your legs, or new, painful or one-sided swelling, ask your doctor before you wear them.

Why you are up at night

All day you are upright, and gravity pulls a little water out of your blood into your ankles and calves. When you lie down, your legs are level with your heart, that water flows back into your blood, and your kidneys turn it into urine, at night. That is why so many people are fine all day and up at 2 and 5.

An X-ray illustration of two lower legs: the bare one with water glowing at the ankle, the one in a sock clearNo sockSock on
By 6 pm, the water has settled in the bare leg. In the sock, less of it has. An illustration: an X-ray does not show water.

Your bladder may be doing its job.

A weak bladder gives a little at a time, day and night. A full bladder every trip means the water is being made at night. Less water in your legs by day means less of it at night.

What you have tried

Why nothing you tried has worked

“Have tried cutting down drinking before bed etc, but no difference.”

Each of these works on something real. None of them works on the water your legs hold all day.

Why it did not stop the trips

Cutting the evening drinks

It takes away the evening glass. The water that wakes you was already in your legs by then, settled there through the day. That is why so many people stop drinking at 6 and still get up at 2.

Why it did not stop the trips

The prostate pill

It works on the prostate, to help the flow. It was never meant for the water your legs hold all day. Keep taking it: it does a different job.

Why it did not stop the trips

Bladder pills

They calm a bladder that squeezes when it is not full. If yours is full every time you get up, the bladder is doing its job, and the volume still comes.

Why it did not stop the trips

One last trip before bed

It empties the bladder at 11. By 2, the water that came back from your legs has filled it again.

Why it did not stop the trips

Being told it is your age

Age makes it more common. It does not make it the reason, and it does not mean nothing can be done.

What none of them do: keep the water out of your legs by day.

The missing piece

What the socks do, in three steps

Light graduated compression, worn from the morning to bedtime: the pressure and the hours that were tested on night trips.

By day
1By day

Sitting and standing, gravity pulls a little water out of your blood into your ankles and calves. By 6 pm you can see it in the line your sock leaves.

The squeeze
2The squeeze

Light graduated socks press gently, tightest at the ankle and lighter up the calf, so less water settles while you are up.

At night
3At night

When you lie down, less comes back into your blood. Your kidneys make less urine at night, and there is less to get up for.

The proof

What the trial found

At Oita University in Japan, 170 adults aged 40 to 79 who got up at night took part. One group wore knee-length graduated socks for at least eight hours a day. The other wore socks that looked the same, with almost no squeeze. Nobody knew which pair they had.

The socks

Each part does one job: fewer trips at night

Graduated, tightest at the ankle

So the squeeze works against gravity where the water settles first.

About 12 to 14 mmHg at the ankle

The trial's pressure: light enough to pull on every morning, not so light they are just socks.

Knee-high

The length of the socks in the trial, covering the ankle and the calf.

Two pairs to a box

One on, one in the wash, so you wear them every day.

The 14-night card

Count your trips for two weeks, the length of the trial, and see it on paper.

A plain everyday knit

They look like socks, not medical gear.

How to wear them

On when you get up. Off when you go to bed. That is all.

1On when you get upBefore your legs have been down for long.
2All dayEight hours or more, as in the trial.
3Off before you lie downNever sleep in them.
4Mark the cardEach morning, last night's trips.

The two weeks, night by night

Tonight
Count your trips. Before you start, write tonight's number on the card. That is the number to beat.
Nights 1 to 7
Wear them every day.Mark every night. Do not judge it yet: the water takes a few days to settle less.
Nights 8 to 14
Compare with the first night. The trial counted at two weeks. Look at the card, not at one good or bad night.
Day 30
Not getting up less?Write to us and the money comes back. Keep the socks.

This is what the two weeks are for: fewer nights broken in two, and mornings that do not start tired.

it would be a real treat to only get up once or twice a night.

The socks folded in front of a plain pill bottle on a nightstand
Not a medicine

Keep your pills. They do a different job.

A prostate pill works on the flow. A bladder pill calms the bladder. Neither reaches the water your legs hold all day. The socks go alongside, with nothing to swallow and nothing to change in what your doctor prescribed.

The questions people ask first

Is it really not my bladder?

A bladder problem shows in the daytime too: you rush all day, and only a little comes out. If you are fine all day and full every time you get up at night, the water is being made at night, and for many people it starts in the legs.

Aren't compression socks tight and hard to get on?

The thick medical kind can be. These are light, at the trial's pressure, sized by ankle and calf, and made to be pulled on every morning. Turn the sock inside out down to the heel, slide your foot in, then roll it up the leg.

Don't they only help while I wear them?

That is the point. They are on while the water would settle, by day. What you count is the night, after they come off.

I already wear compression socks and still get up.

Look at how they are worn: the trial's socks were light, worn from morning to evening, at least eight hours, and off at bed. If you also rush all day, snore hard or have nerve damage in your feet, something else may be waking you.

Should I wear them at night too?

No. They work in the day, while gravity is pulling water into your legs. Off when you lie down.

The 30-day promise

Wear them for 30 days. If you are not getting up less, you get your money back.
